Today’s truck tyre size guide is a simple way to better understand your vehicle’s wheels. Tyres generally follow a standard naming system, which you can locate on the side of the tyre. The name will typically appear like 295/80R/22.5, varying based on their type and placement.

The Truck Tyre Size Numbers on the Sidewall
There are two ways to measure tyre size—metric and imperial. While we will cover both, it’s worth noting that most tyres in South Africa are measured using the metric system.
The measurement for the tyre is 315 millimetres in width, with an aspect ratio of 80% between the height and width. It fits a 22.5-inch wheel with a load index of 156/150 and an L speed rating.
The number 315 refers to the tyre’s width, which should be consistent regardless of where you measure it.
The number 80R refers to the radial profile of a tyre, which indicates the radius size measured on the inflated wall.
The measurement 22.5 refers to the diameter of the rim, expressed in inches.
The number 156 tells you how much weight the tyre can handle, while the letters 150L indicate how fast the tyre can rotate without causing damage.
If you’re using imperial measurements, the numbers on the tyre’s side will show the radial width, represented by “10R,” and the rim size, represented by “17.5.” However, unlike the metric system, imperial tyre sizes may only provide information on some of the other important factors.
The Various Truck Tyre Axles
Truck tyres are utilised for various purposes, depending on where they are situated on the truck. The placement of these tyres is determined by the axle they are located on. The following is a summary of the positions of truck axles based on commercial tyre fitters:
- The steer tyres are located at the front and control the vehicle’s steering. They respond to any commands given through the steering wheel. These tyres are not connected to the engine, which helps to ensure precise steering.
- The drive tyres are in the middle or close to the truck’s engine. They control the engine’s power output, which propels the truck forward or backward. Unlike the front steer tyres, the drive tyres are not made to turn but only to rotate in a single direction. They are positioned near the engine to maintain a short driveshaft and optimise the power transfer from the engine.
- The trailer tyres are located at the vehicle’s rear and are responsible for keeping the trailer stable while in motion. They cannot steer and are not connected to the engine. Their sole purpose is to rotate forward and backward, ensuring the trailer remains upright.
